Happy Friendship Day!

Probably you can go through Wikipedia or Google to find out the roots of how Friendship Day originated and how it was decided to be celebrated on the first Sunday of every August. However, over the last few years such special days depicting the celebrations of some form of relationship between people have gained huge recognition. If not for the existence of the calendar, such days would have seemed completely meaningless but thanks to our ancestors that we have a calendar completing 365 days every year but the 4th time. Once again wishing you all a very Happy Friendship Day!!!!!!!!!

Friendship is that kind of special relationship that doesn't demand any kind of blood relation. It doesn't command a public commitment like that of a marriage. It has even happened on so many occasions that friendship has been the only reason for survival when both the prior relations have failed to help and support. Blood relations and marriage relations generally have an assumed kind of a trust but in friendship the trust has to be earned. An earned pie always teaches more than a passed on pie. Likewise the earned trust teaches us a lot about life and supports us in the most difficult situations than an assumed trust. The best part about earning trust in friendship is that all our friends were strangers to us once upon a time. We earned the trust of strangers and vice versa and that's the reason we have friends today, some of who become an integral part of our lives.

At the end of the day, every relationship is based upon trust be it assumed or earned. If we can see a friend in everyone who surrounds us and forget that we knew the person before and start working to earn the trust of the other person then every relation of ours will be as powerful as that of friendship. Man was born as a social animal and he has to engage with everyone in his society. Hence, it's essential for each one of us to see a friend in everyone around us and work for the good of each other. Only when we support each other can our society be a wonderful place to thrive in.

Accidents of life

Recently I read a line from Mrs. Sudha Murthy's book which said that we are proud about the nations we are born in and this pride is a mere accident. One would be proud of India because s/he was born in India. If the same person was born in some other country s/he would be proud of that country. Similar to this is our new year. People have a lot of craze for celebrating new year. It is after all a number at the end of the day. It is just a mathematical modulation of dates done ages back.

If we really dig into the names of the months in our calendar you can see that october has 'octo' which means '8' but is the tenth month, december has 'dec' which indicates '10' while it's the twelfth month. Some people sometime back, sorry, longtime back assigned some names for a set of days and called them months. When they found that the phase of the same month repeated after one revolution of the earth around the sun they repeated the same month names. Who knows at what point exactly on the earth's orbit did the earth start revolving to coin it as the start of the year. Since there had to be some start January 1st was coined as the start of the year and the day previous to that was coined as the last day of the year. If some other date would have been named as the start of the year, still the seasons or festivals wouldn't have changed. Year would function the same way. Probably coining a start of the year was itself a major accident that happened because of which companies started allotting holidays and people just got one more reason to party and celebrate without any logic.

Life is just filled with such irrelevant logical conclusions for unreasoned accidents. Every day is a fresh day, let's make the best use of it. There is no point of being proud about those for which one has not contributed at all apart from being at the right place at the right time. All pride would  have been there even if the person wouldn't have been there. So concentrate on those works which can be of pride for others once you have contributed your best for it. Let's make time

In this busy world where we are struggling to make a living everyday seldom we remember that once upon a time we were just small babies who couldn't even speak but only smile and cry. In the rapid pace of the ongoing events we seldom find time to talk to our own family. Where can one expect to have time and patience to spend with a small baby which is just few days old? All of us are into the cloud computing world of messages, emails, phone calls so much that we have forgotten the feeling of personal touch. Touch screen smartphones can definitely never satisfy the feeling of a personal touch. A baby remains a baby only until its a baby. I felt guilty that I couldn't go and see my nephew who was born just seven days before because of the work pressure that was pounding on my head. But at last I made time for him and I feel happy about it.

It was such a wondeful feeling of taking the 7 days young baby in my arms and I was smiling at it continuously. Proabably it couldn't understand even if I spoke in 6 different languages as I am a multilinguistic inspirational speaker. I just had one style of communication possible which was just a big wide SMILE. This newborn in my hand was way lighter than the dumbell that I use during my workout but I had to have extreme care while holding it. It just blinked its eyelids seeing me and smiling back at a new face after entering this world on the 7th day. I had to walk for more than 2 kms due to lack of bus facility just for these few precious moments of holding the newborn nephew of mine in my hands. I desperately felt that I had to make time for him. Meeting him was not on the to-do list of work or hobby or recreation but it was the topmost on the priority list of life which I had already procrastinated by seven days. Finally I had made it. Friends! at the end of the day all of us are just humans. No wonder that we have to study and work in order to make a life but remember that at the end of the day you can have only 3 full meals a days and that too until your stomach says its full. I know that there are competitions surrounding you pushing you forward everytime you try to halt for something. Inspite of all these ratrace it's very important to build the bond of family and relationships. Events such as a new childbirth, marriage, festivals are few occasions that have been culturally constructed by our ancestors to develop strong unified bond among families. Please make time for them.

I hope everyone celebrated friendship day with wishes, gifts, parties today. My celebration of this friendship day was with my new 7day young friend. His face still comes in front of my eyes as I type these lines. I wish him a wonderful life ahead. Also wish all of you a very happy friendship day once agian. Keep smiling....................

When cheated to save

Once upon a time the ancient English empire had arranged a voyage for the elite class of United Kingdom. The clergymen, business stalwarts, sportsmen and other classes of people were boarding the ship for the first ever time in their life and they had paid huge sum for this amazing 5000km ocean trip which included every kind of entertainment possible and the food feast was arranged by the best chefs of England. The trip was scheduled for 30 days and every common man of the Victorian land was dreaming of this kind of a trip in their future births atleast. The arrangements for this event which was the first of its kind ever had gone on for six consecutive months and more than a thousand labour was entitled for this task. The ship itself was loaded with five hundred staff for serving three hundred people.

Obviously for such a high valuable voyage the Captain who was appointed was the best of that time. He had an experience of hundreds of water travels. He was assigned the highest titles of England for his service to the nation. He had his best preparations made before the start of this fabulous journey and had all the maps which could help him during the travel. He had mastered the usage of the then available instruments which were necessary to have the best measurements of current flow, wind speed and direction and other important elements. With all these ready the magnanimous journey began with the flashes of light which filled the sky. Celebrations were going on the deck as the journey began. Dance, songs, games were the nature of play. Some spiritual people were inclined towards speeches by clergymen. Almost ten days passed like this when there went up a red signal in the sky all of a sudden. A very loud siren rang to deafen the sound of music and shouts of people. Everyone on board was shocked and were in panic. Then the captain came upon the dance stage to announce to the crowd the most awaited reason for the recent happenings. He begged apology first to let the people know that there had been breakage in the ship's base due to improper maintenance and water was sneaking in through the cracks and informed that the trip had to be abruptly stopped to make the return to the shore in concern of safety of the voyagers. The audience were in no mood to listen to this excuse to cancel the most awaited trip of the century and demanded a fix to the problem than to end the excitement of the trip. There were arguments bouncing between the Captain and the crowd. Everyone on the ship was disheartened finally to lose the battle and agreed to turn their back on the trip and as per his request people helped the staff to throw out the water that was entering the ship slowly through the leakage points. The most hated 'U' turn had been taken.

Upon reaching the shore back home the sad travellers were welcomed back by their family to listen to their unlucky trip. The law and order of the land had ordered a severe punishment to the Captain for being reckless about the ship's maintainence. Everyone was furious against the Captain. All his titles were to be stripped off the next day of the return. When the Captain was given the last chance in the court to defend himself he told that he had cheated the people. He repeated "I cheated to save them" and disclosed the true reason behind the cracks in the ship's base was none other then he himself. He had made those cracks. Everyone in the court was awestruck listening this. Then the Captain explained that he had seen a very big iceberg right just few kilometres away from the ship covered under the fog through his telescope and knew that there would be no escape from hitting it if the ship continued forward. He explained from his earlier rough encounters with the scary nature that on such occasions you really never know how many more obstacles stand ahead. The temperature might really go low enough to solidify the blood or more icebergs can raise above the water level and contruct the passage. He knew that he couldn't prove his intuitions to the people on the ship until they saw it through their bare eyes. That's when he decided an alternate way of convincing people to return back home and made the cracks in the ship. He apologised to the people for being crude enough not to disclose the real reason instead cheat them only to save them. Everyone were in tears just imagining of what would have happened to them if it was not for the Captain's presence of mind and later everyone thanked him for saving their lives to move on with the life which was saved the Captain.

I have tried to bring out the best analogy possible through this story of mine and many of my friends' real life experience. Please share your feedback on is.mohanbn@gmail.com
